DC’s First AAPI Member of the SBOE

Dear Neighbor,

I’m proud to be the first Asian American Member elected to the DC State Board of Education (DCSBOE). It means a lot to me that my colleagues recognized the importance of Asian American/Pacific American Heritage Month at our meeting last night. I had the opportunity to highlight the challenges faced by Asian/Pacific American students in DC, and I’m honored by my colleagues' commitments to support all families and students across DC. I also had the opportunity to highlight the amazing contributions of Asian/Pacific Americans in advancing education achievements across DC, including the amazing work done by Grace Hu to advance digital equity.

This past week, I got to visit the KIPP DC Grow campus, which was recently redistricted to Ward 2. It was great to see their science-based reading instruction in action.

Thanks to the many of you who responded to my last e-mail advocating for more strategic literacy investments championed by Councilmember Pinto. We got unanimous support from DC Council!

Please join me May 22nd at 9 am for Outdoor Storytime at Stead Park (1625 P St NW)! All children ages 3 – 7 are welcome to attend.

Allister
