LGBTQ+ Inclusive Social Studies Standards

Dear Neighbor,

I’m proud of DC for revising our social studies standards, including increased AAPI representation and to be more LGBTQ+ inclusive. As my colleagues and I noted when we unanimously passed new social studies standards, DC now has the country’s most inclusive social studies standards in the country.

Literacy Advisory Board

Are you an early literacy expert/practitioner? Please join my next literacy advisory group meeting on July 12th at 4 p.m. I’m looking for feedback/recommendations regarding on-the-job support for reading instructors and how DC develops a list of recommended literary curricula.

Community Work

I recently had the opportunity to celebrate teachers with EmpowerEd. A special thanks to the dozens of EmpowerEd teachers who have been advising my literacy work on the DCSBOE.

I co-sponsored a conversation at the Shaw Library on Multigenerational Caregiving with the Office of the Student Advocate. We need to do more supporting students to navigate public education, particularly for students changing custody status.

Thanks to PAVE for inviting me to hear from parents discussing and voting on their top 2 policy priorities for the next year: school safety & more specialized programs.

I’ll be speaking about literacy during ANC 2B, 2C, and 2G’s meetings this week. Please join me tonight (7/11) at 6 pm for 2C, tomorrow (7/12) at 7 for 2B, and Thursday (7/13) at 6:30 for 2G.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or recommendations.

All the best,

Allister Chang
